Chicago Skyway Bridge
F.H. Paschen Construction was awarded a contract to replace
deteriorated bridge piers supporting the Chicago Skyway
Bridge at 95th Street. Temporary bridge supports were
designed and constructed to maintain
the bridge deck in its position while existing piers were
removed and new piers constructed in their place. Traffic
volumes and vehicular loading imposed upon the temporary
pier supports was a concern. HBE was contracted to perform
continuous monitoring of the bridge deck to assure there was
no settlement or lateral movement during the critical period
between pier demolition and replacement. Because of the
traffic volume on the Chicago Skyway it was decided to close
I-90 for 15 minutes around 3 a.m. once a week to allow our
survey crews to perform monitoring operations. Since
monitoring was to be performed in total darkness to strict
tolerances conventional survey equipment could not be used.
To meet this challenge HBE had prism targets attached to the
bridge deck at various locations and survey crews used laser
instrumentation to measure any bridge deck movements. The
bridge piers were successfully replaced. The bridge is now
undergoing major bridge deck improvements.
